Phenotypic characterization of beta-lactamase/carbapenemase/oxacillinase and mecA-producing Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria causing infections in humans and from environmental samples.
The project was supported by the Federal Ministry of Education and Science in 2023, and the implementation period is 12 months.
Determining the types of beta-lactamase, carbapenemase, and oxacillinase-producing isolates causing infections in hospital and community patients, as well as from environmental samples, and identifying the cephalosporins that have the strongest influence on selecting mutations leading to the emergence of beta-lactamases, as well as the carbapenems that most strongly select isolates producing carbapenemases from groups A, B, and D, is important for creating hospital antibiotic prescribing protocols and for understanding the spread of these strains (from the environment to humans). Studying the prevalence of specific beta-lactamases in particular hospital wards is important in order to implement measures to control hospital-acquired infections caused by these strains in wards with an extremely high prevalence of beta-lactamases, metallo-beta-lactamases, or oxacillinases. Knowledge of the prevalence of specific types of beta-lactamases, carbapenemases, and oxacillinases in humans and animals is also important for selecting the best methods and antibiotics for their detection. Understanding beta-lactamase types is also important in the treatment of infections caused by these strains, especially urinary tract infections.
The aim of this research project is to determine:
- To determine extended-spectrum beta-lactamases in environmental samples (water, food, animal feces, etc.).
- To determine the prevalence of carbapenemases in environmental samples (water, food, animal feces, etc.).
- To determine the prevalence of oxacillinases in environmental samples (water, food, animal feces, etc.).
- To determine the prevalence of MRSA in environmental samples (water, food, animal feces, etc.).
